I loved this place as a kid, the site is kept clean and in good condition but don’t have as many exhibits as it once did. If you want to take your child to see some animals without a lot of noise this Is a great place for a visit and a picnic.
A quaint visit with memories of years past. Admission is inexpensive as well. Before entering the zoo, I walked through the Japanese garden which seems timeless and has always been a beautiful and serene spot to visit. In the zoo was once a seal exhibit (from what I recall) which is now being used for what looks like a greenhouse. Sadly, the children's amusement park in the grove was closed down years ago. I spoke with staff and a golf course was in the works. I recently visited to find most of the exhibits seemed closed. I saw the snow leopard, a few species of bird (golden eagle, parrot, bald ibis), lemurs, and some tortoise. I believe it was possible to feed some of the birds in one of the exhibits, but that is no longer an option. There were more aquatic and larger animals before. I miss the days when there were more animal friends to visit.
There's a small zoo within these parts where I was able to see a few animals up close. One of the animal caretakers mentioned either the animals' extinction, endangerment, or rehabilitation. Entry requires a minimal fee. The self-tour won't take more than a couple hours. During my visit, the snack bar wasn't opened. It was a pretty quiet atmosphere, and not busy at all. Outside of this zoo, there's a Japanese Garden, picnic sites, outdoor event venues, a golf course, a water park, and therefore some fishing. I missed visiting the Japanese Garden, but it would've been worth my visit. Micke Grove is another broad recreational area. Since the zoo in located inside the grove, there's and initial entrance fee into the multi-acreage park. The drive to get to the zoo goes right, and all the way around several parking lots - look for signage. Visiting here makes for a good random, but leisurely plan.
Very nice park. Well taken care of. Disc golf course has 18 holes of challenging holes with multiple baskets on each hole for different difficulties.
Today I was able to help my wife chaperone her 1st grade class field trip. This is a small zoo. But it was fun, the kids enjoyed it. And it was fun to show them around and let them learn about the different animals. And after we were done inside the zoo. When you come out the front gate. You can cross the street and have a picnic lunch like we did. There was plenty of shaded picnic tables. Enough for both classrooms to set and eat. Then the kid played with balls. And did a scavenger hunt in the picnic area. Bonus was that there was a very clean bathroom for boys and girls. And it was just across the street from the picnic area. And these are streets in the Micke Grove area. So the roads were not busy. It was safe for the kids to use the restroom.
